2020 is almost over, hooray! We know many of you will be thankful to wave goodbye to what has been a resoundingly dreadful year, but before we do, let’s take a moment to celebrate the best smartphones released over the past 12 months.

This Sunday (December 20) we’ll be announcing the winner of our Editor’s Choice award and crowning Android Authority‘s smartphone of the year. However, we’re just a small, dedicated group of smartphone fans. We know that there’s a much larger group of equally passionate and knowledgeable out there — you, our amazing readers.

If you’ve participated in one of our previous Reader’s Choice award votes, then welcome back. It’s business as usual for 2020. If not, don’t worry — it’s very simple!

Voting starts today and continues through to December 23. Then we’ll announce the winner of Android Authority’s Reader’s Choice award on Christmas Eve!

We start by whittling down our shortlist of 16 devices to just four. The 16 phones in contention were chosen after picking out the top performers in our scientific testing. The results were then measured against more intangible criteria such as value, availability, software support, and more. We also set a limit of three phones per manufacturer and excluded Apple devices (perhaps next year).

If your absolute favorite didn’t make the cut then don’t feel bad. Cutting the list back to just 16 wasn’t easy — it turns out 2020 was a pretty great year for smartphones. But be assured that those that are in contention represent the best of the very best.

The vote to bring the 16 down to four will take place on this very website via the survey at the bottom of this article. Voting will close early on Monday, December 21, so get your votes in ASAP. We’ll then take the top four and spread the love to our social media channels. Due to polling restrictions on these platforms, we sadly can’t add all 16 candidates. Instead, we offer up the final four.

We start with YouTube and Twitter to bring it to our final two and then add Instagram and Facebook to the mix for the final deciding vote to crown your ultimate winner. Both sets of social polls will be live for 24 hours.
