TCL's XR Concept Glasses Want to Replace Your Smartphone - PCMag

https://ift.tt/2KSW0PQ

TCL is hitting CES hard this year, with an ambitious slate of products we hope to see make their way to the US. We're going to break it down by category to make everything easy to keep track of.

30-Series Phones

TCL teased its latest smartphone lineup, the 30-series, in advance of Mobile World Congress. Right now there are eight phones on the company’s roadmap, including the TCL 30, TCL 30+, TCL 30e, TCL 30 XE 5G, TCL 30 5G, TCL 30 V 5G, TCL SE, and TCL 306.

We don’t expect all of these models to come to the US, but Stefan Streit, TCL’s general manager of global marketing, told PCMag that several of these handsets will likely make their way here. Eric Anderson, general manager and vice president of TCL Communications North America, also confirmed that the company has partnership agreements with every major US carrier, so you can expect to see a lot more TCL phones on store shelves in the coming months. That said, only the TCL 30 XE 5G and TCL 30 V 5G are confirmed for the US at this time.

The TCL 30 XE 5G is a T-Mobile exclusive that offers affordable 5G (though we don't know the price just yet). It has a 6.52-inch LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate, along with a triple-camera stack with a 12MP primary lens. The phone is powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 700 chipset along with 4GB of RAM and has 64GB of storage.

The midrange TCL 30 V 5G is a Verizon exclusive with mmWave connectivity. It sports a 6.67-inch FHD+ LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate, stereo speakers, and a triple-camera stack with a 50MP primary lens. The 30 V 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G chipset with 4GB of RAM and has 128GB of storage.

Both phones are expected to be available on their respective carriers in the coming weeks, so check back for dates and pricing.

Tablets for Everyone

As for tablets, TCL announced the Nxtpaper 10s. No, it’s not the same E Ink-alternative Nxtpaper the company has been working on for years (though Strait told PCMag that TCL is still working to refine its next-gen display technology for that model). Instead, the Nxtpaper 10s is an LCD tablet with specialized eye protection. There’s also a stylus in the box, and the display has a paper-like finish to make writing feel more natural.

A trio of child-friendly tablets, called TCL Tkee, come in three sizes, have a sturdy bumper case, and are preloaded with TCL Kids, a specialized UI with more than 20,000 educational videos, 400 storybooks, and over 50 kid-friendly apps. The Tkee Mini is the smallest of the bunch with an 7-inch display, and will sell for about $99. The company will also have 8- and 10-inch models.

The TCL 10L is built for basic tasks like video streaming, with a large 10.1-inch LCD and modest specs including a MediaTek 8167B chipset, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage.

Finally, the TCL 8 4G features an 8-inch LCD and LTE connectivity. It's powered by a MediTek Helio P22T chipset and 3GB of RAM. There’s 32GB of storage, as well as a microSD slot that allows you to add up to 256GB of external storage.

TCL 14 Go

After several years of creating solid yet affordable smartphones and tablets, it only makes sense TCL would make its first foray into the laptop market. At $349, the TCL 14 Go is an affordable but sleek laptop with LTE connectivity.

Powered by a Snapdragon 7c chipset and 4GB of RAM, the TCL 14 Go seems best suited for everyday tasks like word processing and online classes. It comes with 128GB of storage and ships with Windows 11.

True to its name, the TCL 14 Go has a 14.1-inch LCD. Resolution comes in at 1,366 by 768 pixels, with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Nxtwear Air and XR Concept Glasses

When we tested TCL’s original Nxtwear glasses last year, we were impressed by their potential, but found their overall execution left a lot to be desired.

TCL's Nxtwear Air glasses sport much of the same hardware, but manage to do so in a notably slimmer form factor. There are some improvements with the lens and bridges as well.

Although TCL has yet to announce availability or pricing, Strait said the company is working to bring the glasses to the US and wants to offer them bundled with streaming video services as it did with the original Nxtwear in Australia.

TCL XR Concept Glasses

Since no CES announcement feels complete with a concept item, TCL also introduced its XR Concept Glasses. The glasses have a MicroLED display with full-lens holographic waveguide technology. They can do many of the same things your phone can, including smart home automation, starting your car, live navigation, and real-time sharing at home or work.

While just a concept, TCL wants these glasses to be more than a novelty item. We have a feeling they'll make it out of the prototype phase once Meta and other software developers start releasing next-generation mixed-reality solutions.
