Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman pointed out this change via a tweet. He tweeted that a direct link of the NextVR app in the Google Play Store brings up an error message which says that the app is not found. We also tried to search for the app in the Google Play Store and it can’t be found.
Apple confirmed the acquisition of NextVR to Bloomberg. The company said that with this acquisition Apple is aiming to change the way its users watch sports and entertainment. The acquisition is said to be valued at around $100 million. The acquisition is not closed yet but the companies have started informing the employees who will have to relocate from San Diego to the Cupertino area.
NextVR is known for broadcasting sports and entertainment events as 360-degree content for various VR headset including Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and others. The company had partnerships with the NBA, Fox Sports, and others.
This is not the first time that something like this has happened. Last month Apple also acquired the weather app Dark Sky and as part of the acquisition, the company announced that it will shut down the Android and WearOS versions of the app.
Android and WearOS users will not be able to use the Dark Sky app from July 1. The app will be completely removed from the Android platform. On the other hand, iOS users will be able to use the app in the same manner.
