Global smartphone market is experiencing a much needed boom after the coronavirus-induced shutdown of the industry. A new report mentions that a total of 353.6 million smartphones were shipped during the third quarter of this year.
The market study has been released by International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide in its Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker analysis report. IDC highlights how with the increase in global shipments of smartphones, several industry leaders managed to gain the top spots.
The report mapped out the top 5 smartphone companies across the globe based on their worldwide shipments, market share as well as the year-over-year growth. Here are the ones that made it to the top.
Samsung
Samsung managed to grab the market lead back from Huawei with a year-on-year growth of just 2.9%. Even with the measly increase, the Korean tech major 22.7% of global market share, shipping 80.4 million units in the process.
Huawei
While Samsung made good this year, Huawei faced flak in both its Western as well as home markets. It shipped a total of 51.9 million smartphones resulting in a 14.7% market share. This marked a huge year-on-year drop of 22 percent for the Chinese tech giant.
Xiaomi
Xiaomi marked an impressive year-on-year growth of 42%, propelling it to the third spot for the first time against Apple. The company was able to ship a total of 46.5 million devices and along with it, a 13.1% market share globally.
Apple
The iPhone maker shipped a total of 41.6 million iPhones in the third quarter, down 10.6% over last year. This resulted in the company slipping to the fourth spot on the list for the first time with 11.8% share.
While the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE were able to grab considerable sales for the company, the drop is being blamed on the late launch of the new iPhone 12 series.
Vivo
Vivo made its entry back to the Top 5 list this quarter with 31.5 million units shipped, a 4.2% year-on-year growth and a total of 8.9% market share. The company was able to record impressive sales in India, a big market for its low-end models, making it grow by as much as 30% year-on-year.
