Believe it or not, it seems like Samsung is developing 600MP camera sensor for smartphones. This information comes from Ice Universe, one of the most prominent tipsters in the business.
This 600MP sensor, in particular, will offer 0.8um pixel size, the same as Sony’s IMX586 48MP unit. Such a sensor would take up around 12-percent of space inside a smartphone, and would result in a 22mm protrusion on the back.
You can see that in an image provided below, an image Ice Universe shared. That looks kind of ridiculous, doesn’t it? Well, yeah, it does, which is why Samsung is focused on packing that up neatly… somehow.

The company is trying to find a solution to this problem, and it will be interesting to see how will they do it. That needs to be trimmed down considerably. Smartphones these days are around 8mm thick, and this protrusion alone is 22mm.
Samsung will, for sure, use ISOCELL pixel binning technology here, which will help it trim down that bulge. The company may even reduce the size of those pixels towards the same goal.
If there’s something we’ve learned these past few years, is that megapixel wars don’t make all that much sense. Apple and Google have stayed out of it, and they offer smartphones that have stellar cameras.
We’re not saying megapixels are bad, quite the contrary, but this jump seems crazy. The thing is, a 600MP sensor would offer a lot more versatility, and with the right software, it could do wonders.

Do note that this sensor is far from being ready. Samsung seems to be in the early stages of its development. Chances are we’ll see 150MP and 250MP sensors before this one comes to the market.
The next step for Samsung is offering its second-gen 108-megapixel ISOCELL camera with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. That handset is scheduled to arrive next month, in mid-January. Along with it, the Galaxy S21 and S21+ will launch, but won’t offer that sensor.
