Google Stadia seems to be releasing a major update to Stadia, bringing it to new televisions, including Android TVs. Stadia seems to keep going out of its way to make more availability for its consoles, despite the fact it was holding itself back from the start. With other competition, such as Nvidia with its GeforceNOW application, Stadia needs to step it up if it wants to keep its head above water.
Stadia’s Announcement
Posted on the community blog for the online service, Stadia announced that they would launch a new version of the service on Chromecast’s Google TV. With the ability to play Stadia instantly on the newest iterations of Chromecast, this launch comes on June 23. The real announcement from Google is that a plethora of new televisions and smart TVs will be able to play Stadia as well. Google lists the following TVs that will receive upcoming support for their cloud-based streaming platform.
- Chromecast with Google TV
- Hisense® Android Smart TVs (U7G, U8G, U9G)
- Nvidia® Shield TV
- Nvidia® Shield TV Pro
- Onn™ FHD Streaming Stick and UHD Streaming Device
- Philips® 8215, 8505, and OLED 935/805 Series Android TVs
- Xiaomi® MIBOX3 and MIBOX4
All of these televisions will be able to play Stadia. However, it might be too late for Google, as their insistence to put Stadia on Google devices might have caused their downfall.
When Google launched Stadia, players could give the games a shot on PC, phones, and TV. While they were only available on Chrome browsers, Chromebooks, Chromecast, and the Google Pixel for a short time before being put on Android phones, players were unable to enjoy their favorite titles unless they were connected through some other chrome entity. This made it near impossible for players who wanted to try Stadia out on their iPhones, Android TVs, or if they happened to use a browser like Firefox.
However, it seems like Google is backtracking on their Google-centric promises, as Staida is being brought to Android TVs. This seems to be a step in the right direction for Google as they try to get back into the forefront of cloud-based gaming. With plenty of competition, such as Microsoft’s xCloud and Nvidia’s GeforceNOW, which already runs on Shield TVs, something Google is actively supporting now, it appears that only time is going to tell whether Google can keep it up for the foreseeable future.
