So, 2020 is already blasting past our very eyes, and, if you're like us, your smartphone upgrade might be hurtling towards you before you've even started to think about what your next phone is going to be.
If you're unprepared, you might not even know that some of the best phones we have ever seen are already out, and it can all be a tad stressful picking out the very best device for you.
Whether you're a budding photographer who's looking for a powerful camera phone, or you want a giant screen to watch Netflix or play games on the go, there's plenty to consider with some of the latest and greatest handsets.
Which is why we put together this complete guide to the very best smartphones on the market right now, ranking them from best to worst (in our opinion), based on their value for money, the quality of their camera, screen size, special features and just their overall ability to do what you want them to do.
As we mentioned, we already have some pretty special devices out right now, with Samsung already dropping its flagship Galaxy S20 series and the gimmicky Galaxy Z Flip smartphone, and there's still plenty to look forward to from Apple, Google, Huawei and OnePlus, so we'll be updating this article with all the new handsets as they release.
Is Samsung better than Apple?
Honestly, this is a question best asked and answered in your own head, as there are strong arguments for both, depending on your needs.
Samsung has always been the phone for trendy hipsters and trailblazers who just *HAVE* to have the latest technology in their phone. Apple, on the other hand, always produce solid, easy-to-use smartphones with great features (we love you, iMessage) that you just can't live without.
It really comes down to what you prefer and what you're looking for.
Let's talk Samsung. With the new S20 handsets, you can enjoy the super-fast 5G connection – more on that in a second – extreme zoom on the camera and the usual expansion to your storage through MicroSD cards.
You can also customise and play around with third-party apps way easier, and you aren't restricted to a particular user interface (UI) if you prefer your display to be set up a certain way. You really can't beat the ability to make your own phone completely unique to you, and you'll always be among the cutting edge of technology with all the latest features.
Apple phones on the other hand are more restricted in the UI, but it's such an intuitive and simple one that you'll rarely feel like you want to change things up.
App developers are way more engaged in making their apps work on iOS than Android so you'll always have the best support and widest choice, and everything is just designed to make your life easier.
The downside is that you'll have to wait to get 5G support (seriously, Apple, where is that next-gen connection?) and the camera is often lacking when compared to Android handsets. And don't even get us started on the battery life.
TL;DR: It's basically up to you but, as you'll see from our list below, we do slightly favour the Samsung line-up so far – though we are still waiting for Apple's 2020 devices.

Yes, there are other Android devices other than Samsung, in case you didn't know. In fact, there's a wealth of excellent options from other developers that you really should look into.
Huawei is taking huge strides to making the best camera phone available on the market, and Google is still producing excellent – if underrated – devices in their own right. You might not think about these handsets as all you see these days is the battle between the Samsung and Apple giants, but they are well worth considering if your upgrade is coming round the corner.
Should I care about 5G?
At this point, 5G is actually a bit of tech that you should pay attention to, now that the UK is offering up a wider coverage across the country, giving you access to insanely fast download speeds in most major cities.
5G is basically a major step up from your standard 4G connection – you know, the data allowance that makes up most of your contract cost that lets you access the internet and apps without a Wi-Fi.
4G is normally pretty fast, streaming HD content fairly easily and taking a minute or two to download movies. Even social media takes just a second or two to load up on a solid 4G connection, though we know 4G isn't always super stable.
5G turbochargers that let you download HD movies in literally seconds. It's roughly 10x faster than a full 4G connection and, once you experience it, you'll quickly wonder how you lasted so long without using it, it's such a drastic change in speed.
Basically it's better in every way, and if a phone offers a 5G SIM card, you should look into upgrading to make your life a little faster.

Now that all that is out the way, let's get down to the very best smartphones of 2020.
Samsung Galaxy S20

It might not even be out yet, but we already think the Galaxy S20 series is one of the best handsets we have ever seen. Releasing to the world on March 10, the new smartphone is an absolute Swiss-Army knife that is capable of amazing photography, 5G connections, and has a gorgeous display to watch content on.
The camera is the most impressive feature on the new device, and boy is it good.
The quality of the camera changes depending on if you go for the S20 Ultra, S20+, or the standard S20, but all three snappers stand up as some of the best cameras on the market.
The S20 Ultra camera offers photos up to 108MP, which is a monstrously high amount of megapixels in a phone. Oh, and did we mention it has up to 100x optical zoom? Who knows how frequently you'll be using this immense bit of tech – seriously, how often are you going to be wanting to zoom that far? – but it's there if you need it and we love it.
The S20 and S20+ are a bit more pedestrian, offering up to 30x optical zoom, though this is far more than most other camera phones can offer, so you can't really grumble.
If that doesn't impress you, let's talk about the powerful display. A huge 6.2" Quad HD+ Infinity-O screen will blast the pixels directly into your eyeballs and everything from games and Netflix shows to your latest Instagram snaps will look stunning on the edge-to-edge glass.

Lastly, we love that Samsung has fully invested in the 5G future we are all hurtling towards, offering up the upgraded download speeds on all three handsets, something that Apple is still lagging far behind on with its iPhone 11 series.

If you thought flippable phones were a gimmick, think again, as Samsung is trying really hard to make foldable phones a thing. And to be fair, we think it's succeeded with the latest attempt, The Galaxy Z Flip.

Instead of folding side to side, like the much maligned Galaxy Fold, the Z Flip folds top to bottom, like an old flip phone, which is just the way we like it. There is something mythically satisfying about ending a call with a snap of the screen closing downwards that we will never understand.
The phone itself is pretty darn gorgeous, with the phone offering up impressive features both open and closed.
When closed, the front of the phone has a mini display to show you notifications and a viewfinder for if you want to snap a quick selfie without opening up the phone itself. It's also surprisingly small and unobtrusive when folded down.
When opened, you might have to learn to love the slight crease in the middle of your screen to accommodate the hinge, but honestly, we think you'll quickly forget about it, much like you forgot about the top notch on almost every other phone.

Ok, we know you've heard enough about the Samsung phones, what about the iOS fans out there?

In 2019, Apple reminded us that it can produce some sensational smartphones with the new 11 series, and they are among some of the best handsets available, particularly if you care about photography.
The 11 Pro has a wealth of features that you really do need in a smartphone, and there's so much to enjoy it's hard to pick a specific thing that we love more than any other, as it's so well-rounded.
If we had to pick though, we'd go for the camera set-up, which almost seems like it was specifically built for Instagram influencers and YouTubers, thanks to the jam-packed, triple-lens set-up.
The camera takes spectacular pictures and videos, drawing out the best shots with the "Live" feature and emphasising light and colour from your pictures.
The best feature is when recording video. You can film from all three lenses at the same time, getting a close-up, a wide, and an ultrawide shot to give you options when editing footage together – perfect for raising your clout online.
We don't like that Apple remains unmoved by the growing 5G trend of 2020, but we'd expect it to catch up in the next year or so, as it is always a little behind Samsung when it comes to the latest tech.

Yep, you might not think the P30 Pro should be placed so high on the list, but it's honestly one of the best camera phones out there and if getting the perfect pictures for your 'Gram is all you care about, then this is the choice for you.

If you're ok with an Android OS and you're not convinced by Samsung, the Huawei is the next best option – though the new S20 series is pretty much on par with the P30 Pro lenses. However, Huawei is much cheaper than the latest flagships from Samsung, so it's great for those on a budget.
It has special tech to make the most out of low-light situations, so selfies on a night out will look pristine, and it also has impressive zoom (5x and 10x optical zoom) for those epic wide shots.

Finally, we have the 7T Pro which is an excellent little device if the screen is what you really care about. If you commute a lot, or play many games and stream many Netflix shows on your phone, then you should 100% get this device, as it has a wicked display that no other phone (yet) offers.

Basically, the display has a 90Hz refresh rate, which sounds complicated, and it is, but it makes the screen buttery smooth all the time.
The refresh rate refers to the amount of individual times the screen can refresh per second. Most phones have a 24Hz refresh rate, which is just fine, but 90Hz is a supercharger to your screen, and you'll immediately notice the difference.
It's also a QHD+AMOLED which makes everything look gorgeous anyway, with colours popping out the screen to make content look incredible.
