Shooting manual photographs and videos with a smartphone can get tricky, but Moment's Pro Camera app doesn't mind catering to experienced users. Now, some users are getting left in the dark. In a surprise announcement, Moment confirmed its Android app will no longer receive updates. Moment feels its team should focus on other apps, including the Pro Camera app for iOS. So it's actually only the Android version getting discontinued.
Moment directed the blame for this decision at Android's fragmentation. The mobile operating system has 2.5 billion monthly active devices, but they're running different versions and recent releases struggle to gain traction. Pixel phones get software updates first, but Google's partners often take several months, or up to a year, to roll out the latest version of Android to third-party hardware. Fragmentation splinters the platform, and Moment doesn't want to focus on multiple versions with its limited resources.
"We love Android, but unfortunately, we don't have the engineering bandwidth to continue developing this app," Moment co-founder Marc Barros said in an email to customers.
The Pro Camera app currently has a 2.5-star rating on Google's Play Store. Most users explain that the app lacks stability on their devices.
It'll remain available for download, but don't expect Moment to push updates even if the app deteriorates. Moment did, however, tease that the app could turn into an open-source project. Several developers could pick up the code behind Moment's Pro Camera app and continue developing its feature set. That'll take some time to occur, and any interested developers can get in touch with Moment ([email protected]) to discuss the possibility.
Lenses aren't losing Android support, fortunately. Customers who purchased Moment's attachment-based accessories can use them with their smartphones as usual.
Moment encourages users with Android devices to download the Filmic Pro app. It costs $15, but the app has a lot of the same capabilities offered by the Pro Camera app in addition to other enhancements. The Filmic Pro app recently captured Lady Gaga's "Stupid Love" music video using an iPhone 11 Pro. Decide whether or not you'd like to switch, but keep in mind the Filmic Pro app on Android might not get updates as frequently as its iOS counterpart.
