Following the Government of India’s guidelines, Nokia Mobile began its services in India from May 4, after about 40 days of temporary shutdown due to the COVID-19. After resuming the online sales, HMD Global observed a shift in the buying pattern among the buyers.
Nokia 7.2, a mid-segment smartphone sold the most among the Nokia smartphones, followed by Nokia 3.2 and Nokia 2.3, said Sanmeet Singh Kochhar, Vice President – India & MENA (Middle East and North Africa), HMD Global. Similarly, IDC estimates that the shipments of smartphones under ₹ 10000, are expected to dip, and even the feature phone market is expected to experience a downhill in H2 2020.
Apart from this, there is also a shift in sentiment of the Indian smartphone buyers from the Chinese brands to the non-Chinese ones. Ajey Mehta, Vice President – Corporate Business Development, HMD Global in the Horasis India Meeting said that companies are now looking for a “China-plus one” strategy, which poses an attractive opportunity for India to become a big manufacturing hub.
He feels that COVID-19 has accelerated this process and that 5G in the future will further enhance the growth opportunities of manufacturing in the Indian market. He also added that mobile phone manufacturers require a global supply chain system to deliver products, so they have to rely on other places for manufacturing, and relying on a single source or country for manufacturing is not viable.
Excluding Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 8 Sirocco, all the Nokia phones that sell in India are manufactured in India. Currently, HMD Global has four ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) in India, namely, DBG Technology (Haryana), MCM Telecom Equipment (Uttar Pradesh), Rising Stars Mobile, and TSMT Technology, both in Tamil Nadu.
As per BIS certification, Nokia 5.3 in India will be or is being produced by DBG Technology. We can expect its launch in India soon. It will also help Nokia Mobile reduce the void created due to the lack of a smartphone in the range of ₹ 10000 (€120, US$130) to ₹ 15000 (€180, US$200).
