Apple and Google have made a joint announcement that they will adapt their respective operating systems to help track the spread of coronavirus.
Both iOS and Android – which collectively make up most of the smartphones on Earth – will soon work together to support ‘contact tracing’. Starting in May, the two tech giants will release APIs (application programming interfaces) enabling interoperability for their respective platforms.
Health agencies and NGOs will then be able to utilise this for apps that help track the spread of the disease. Both companies have maintained that users will have to opt-in to the project and that privacy and security are of the ‘utmost importance’.
Contact tracing is basically a means of keeping track of an infected person’s recent physical proximity to others. Considering how many of us carry smartphones, the option for these devices to reach out and record if another passes close by is a valuable tool for measuring how people interact.

‘Since COVID-19 can be transmitted through close proximity to affected individuals, public health officials have identified contact tracing as a valuable tool to help contain its spread,’ both companies wrote on their respective blogs.
‘A number of leading public health authorities, universities, and NGOs around the world have been doing important work to develop opt-in contact tracing technology. To further this cause, Apple and Google will be launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing.
While APIs and apps will perform the first wave of contact tracing, Apple and Google say they will go further and built Bluetooth-level connectivity directly into their operating systems. They say this is more accurate and will allow more individuals to participate – if they choose to.
‘All of us at Apple and Google believe there has never been a more important moment to work together to solve one of the world’s most pressing problems,’ the companies said.
‘Through close cooperation and collaboration with developers, governments and public health providers, we hope to harness the power of technology to help countries around the world slow the spread of COVID-19 and accelerate the return of everyday life.’
