Q2 2020 US smartphone sales suffered a massive drop compared with the same period in 2019 because of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Consumers faced a lockdown, which has largely been lifted (but may return), and ongoing economic uncertainty. However, not all brands performed the same, and the data makes interesting reading.
The information, produced by Counterpoint, paints a depressing picture of US smartphone sales year-on-year, especially for OnePlus, Motorola, and ZTE, which saw sales decline by at least 60% each. This is particularly disappointing for OnePlus: the OnePlus 8 is one of our favorite smartphones, but as Jared wrote, it is now priced largely in line with competitors. The OnePlus 8 Pro, available with both T-Mobile and Verizon, was out of stock for a number of weeks, and this impacted sales. Motorola’s drop in sales is also disappointing and may also reflect pricing – the Motorola Edge+ is a flagship phone complete with flagship pricing, was released in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and is only available on the Verizon Wireless network.
Chinese manufacturer ZTE appears to have been tarred with the same national security concerns as Huawei and it is difficult to see their sales recovering any time soon.
The two South Korean smartphone manufacturers, LG and Samsung, also showed falling sales. LG’s sales fell by 35% but Samsung almost bucked the trend, showing a 10% decline in sales. Counterpoint explains that the flagship Galaxy S20 has sold approximately 40% less than the 2019 flagship Galaxy S10 device, meaning it is either the outgoing Galaxy S10 or Samsung’s mid-range and lower devices selling well. Apple split these two manufacturers, showing a sales decline of 23% – the introduction of the new iPhone SE wasn’t enough to keep sales growth positive.
Interestingly, Counterpoint showed that weekly smartphone sales for May and June recovered, reflecting customers able to return to carrier stores. However, there’s no telling where sales numbers will go in July given the gloomy US COVID-19 news and outlook. Although Samsung strongly outperformed Apple, the Korean executives likely won’t be celebrating this drop in sales – and Samsung’s sales tend to outperform Apple in the first half of the year, but underperform in the second half.
