Google is reportedly ditching lock screen album art in Android 11.
According to 9To5Google, which cited a recent Issue Tracker post, the upcoming mobile OS (known internally as "R") will "no longer show album art on the lock screen." Unlike previous iterations, which highlighted active media by temporarily replacing the phone's wallpaper with a pertinent album cover (blurred in Android 10), Android 11 will stick to a simple control banner. Users can still see the song/artist and platform, as well as the CD art as a thumbnail, while retaining their chosen background.
The surprisingly divisive move has left some folks, like Redditor Shortdonut, feeling miffed. "I'm personally not [too] happy," they wrote in response to the news. "I listen to [a lot] of music [and] I really dug the blurred album art in the back. It looked cool," they continued. "[I don't know] why they're removing [it], it just doesn't make sense."
Others, meanwhile, are more excited about the change: "In my opinion, this is the right move," vivelaal countered on Reddit. "Unless you have a high-res album cover image, it looks plain bad on high-resolution screens. The blur effect makes up for this a little, but it leads to the album being indistinguishable from any other random wallpaper, so it's utterly superfluous as a result."
Android 11 "significantly revamps" the media playback experience. For now, the new OS is still in beta, but features a new swipeable carousel of audio output from various apps, making it easy to control local and remote streams or resume previous sessions with the click of a button. Some early-bird users are already experiencing the redesign, but most folks are still running the old design, which the Android team considers as being "a bug that has already been 'fixed' in an internal/upcoming build." Google did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.
