I mentioned a few bits about upcoming smartphones this year. I’m pretty excited for the flagship phones that are coming down the pipeline. I spoke about those flagship phones, including iPhone 13, the recently announced Galaxy S21, and the upcoming Galaxy Foldables expected to launch later this year.
his time, we’re taking a look at the more affordable devices that are expected to launch in 2021. Affordable phones have become more prevalent, with more people balking at the high prices of devices like iPhone 12 Pro, Galaxy Z Fold 2, etc. Here are the devices that I expect to see in 2021.
Samsung
The South Korean company has been rumored to launch at least 10 affordable devices throughout 2021.
We could potentially see a more affordable foldable phone coming from the country. We will also probably see a few inexpensive versions of the recently launched Galaxy S21, including a Galaxy S21 Fan Edition. All potential launches aside, we can only expect to see multiple affordable phones come from the company throughout the year.
Samsung A72: The A72 is the top-tier mid-range device coming in 2021.
The Samsung Galaxy A72 is expected to launch sometime during the first half of 2021. The price will be anywhere from $400 to $599 at launch.
Coming from GSM Arena;
Like the name implies, [the A72] is destined to be the successor to the Galaxy A71, and its design language is unsurprisingly incredibly similar to that of the Galaxy A52 5G. Think of the A72 as basically the A52’s slightly larger brother.
The Samsung A72 is expected to come with the following specifications:
- 6.7" Screen
- 3.5mm headphone jack (it still exists!)
- Snapdragon 750G
- 5G-Capable
- 1080p (not 120Hz) OLED Infinity O style display.
- 4G/5G Capable
- 32MP Front Camera
- Quad Camera rear setup: 64MP Main Camera, 12MP Ultrawide Camera, 5MP Depth Senser, 5MP Macro Sensor. OIS Stabilization may come with the A72.
- RAM is unknown, but it would be surprising if it’s anything less than 8GB for the A72.
You can expect the Samsung A72 as a premium style device for an affordable price. For the price, the specs for the A72 are decent.
Samsung A52: The Samsung A52 is the little sibling of the A72 and the update to the A51. The A52 comes with updated specifications and an even more affordable price. The A52 price is expected to be below $500, making for an incredibly affordable decent device that doesn’t put a heavy dent in your pockets.
The A51 did pretty well for the company when it launched last year, so why fix things that aren’t broken? The device holds on to a lot of the features that the A51 had. Coming from XDA-Developers;
From what we can tell, Samsung was quite satisfied with how this year’s Galaxy A51 turned out, and it doesn’t look like the company will stray very far with the Galaxy A52 5G. If you’re waiting for a new mid-range device from Samsung, this one might be the one to wait for. Incidentally, the Galaxy A32 5G also recently leaked, so if you’re waiting for something even more affordable, there appears to be no shortage of options coming soon.
Here are some of the A52 Specs:
- 1080p 60Hz refresh rate Infinity O display
- 6.5" Display Size
- $499 price tag
- 5G Capable
- 6/8GB RAM
- 128GB Storage with Expandable Slot via Micro SDXC
- 32MP Selfie Cam
- Quad Combo Rear Camera (48MP Main +12MP Ultrawide + 5MP Macro + 5MP Depth Lens)
- Under-display Fingerprint Scanner
- Snapdragon 750G 5G SoC (System on a Chip)
- 3.5mm headphone jack
Samsung A32: The Samsung A32 is the least expensive, most affordable Android device out of the known group. Now, this is subject to change when more details of the A22, A12, and A02 details emerge, but as it stands right now, the A32 would be the least expensive Samsung device of 2021.
Considering the price of the A32; it’s wild to see that the device has 6GB and 8GB RAM options for purchase. The A32 will launch with the same RAM options as the companies flagship Galaxy S21.
Even though you are missing features like 120Hz refresh rate for its display, wireless fast charging, and top tier processing speeds coming from the flagship Snapdragon 8 series processor, there will be features that you will have instead. Those features being the long-lasting battery and 5G data speeds.
Let’s check out the Samsung A32 Specs (from 9to5 Google) :
- Priced at a sub $350 level
- The most affordable 5G option from Samsung
- 6.5" 1600x900 display (Infinity V…the dewdrop display)
- 5000 mAh battery
- The Dimensity 720 Processor (maybe)
- 13 MP Selfie Camera
- Quad Camera rear set up (48MP Main + 8MP Ultrawide + 5MP depth + 5MP macro camera)
- 4, 6, 8GB RAM options
- 64/128GB storage options, expandable via MicroSDXC card slot
Motorola
Motorola G Series: The Moto G series is hands down the most popular Motorola series on the market.
9to5Google reported in January 2020 that Motorola has managed to sell 100 Million Moto G Devices since 2013. More than the companies X, E, and Z series of devices.
So we can expect the 10th iteration of the device to be reliable devices of quality. Not many specs are known about the main Moto 10 series to date, but we do know that there will be a Moto G 10 Play coming to light soon. Rumored specs (from Gadgets Now) on the G10 play so far;
- 4GB RAM
- 5000 mAh Battery
- Snapdragon 730G
- 16MP Front Camera
- 64MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP Rear Combo setup
Aside from the beefy battery, the Moto G 10 Play would be considered the entry-level G Series device. The specs are a little on the lighter side, however, the Moto G Play was always known as the entry-level version of the G series. We can expect more powerful counterparts to launch throughout 2021.
I’ve owned a few Moto G Series devices over the years. The Moto G was always super reliable, super affordable, and a worthy option for folks looking for an affordable phone to use as their daily driver.
There are more rumors regarding the Moto G 10 with the possibility of a Snapdragon 8 Series powered Moto G potentially launching to commemorate the 10th Generation of the Moto G.
The potential advantages of having a high-end processor powering a mid-range device would huge.
Coming from Motorola Mobility President Sergio Brunac (via PC Mag)
“2021 will mark the 10th generation of Moto G, and nothing would make us prouder than bringing 800-series experiences to this family,”
With a Snapdragon 8 Series powered 10th generation Moto G, there would be endless possibilities of Moto G powered desktop computing, TV streaming, gaming, and more.
A Snapdragon 8 Series powered Moto G would likely mean that the G10 can be as powerful as some other flagship devices available in 2021. It would also mean that the price of the Moto G10 family of devices will tick up ever so slightly with beefed-up processors under the hood.
Typically we would see the Moto G priced in the $200 to $300 range. A higher-powered Moto G might be more expensive, but the device would still be a very affordable alternative to the flagship options available.
Motorola E Series: The most affordable Motorola series can be expected with moderate updates slated for the 8th generation device. Taking these particular specs with a monumental grain of salt from MySmartPrice, the E8 rumored to have the following:
- 4GB RAM
- 64GB Storage
- Quad Camera Set up (48MP Main + 8MP Ultrawide + 2MP depth + 2MP Macro Config)
- 5000 mAh battery
- Snapdragon 460 processor
- No 5G
- No Fast Charging
- 6.44" 720p display
The Moto E8 will likely not stray far from the previous E series of devices. This device is an ultra-affordable option for people who don’t have buckets of money to spend. Considering the current state of the economy, people will have tighter budgets in 2021.
The device will be just as reliable as some of the more expensive options, without the bells and whistles as the more expensive options. You can take pretty decent pictures for your social media pages, but don’t expect to win any photography contests with the shots.
The display won’t have a high-speed refresh rate, but you likely won’t be looking for a phone with a high refresh rate if the budget isn’t there. I suppose we will see who this device works best for when it launches.
LG:
LG Stylo 7: The LG Stylo 7 will be the 7th iteration of the affordable stylus packing Galaxy Note competitor. The Stylo has been an important part of the affordable smartphone game for a very long time.
This will also be the first Stylo with a 5G capable option. Not much has been mentioned about the LG Stylo, however, we have a few features mentioned from 91 mobiles. Again, these specs are rumored so take this with a grain of salt.
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- 5G Capable
- Some sort of multi-camera setup for the rear camera options with a likely 48MP main camera, 8 MP ultrawide + 2MP Depth Camera + 2MP Macro Camera
- 4GB RAM
- Snapdragon 460 Processor
- 4000mAh Battery
Many people choose the LG Stylo as an alternative to the Galaxy Note due to its affordability and relative reliability that doesn’t put a beating on your wallet. The Stylo 7 gives people an option to have a device with 5G capability that they can afford. Not bad.
OnePlus:
Not a lot is known about the next iteration of the One Plus Nord 2 or the 2021 version of the One Plus Nord. I’ve always known OnePlus to have their flagship devices be options that were marketed to people with a slightly lower budget, thus the moniker “Flagship killer”.
I was a bit more perplexed when the company announced its version of a “budget” device called the One Plus Nord. Yet the device launched, and now we’re here with a One Plus Nord 2. Here are some specs that we may see from Trak.;
- potentially up to 12GB RAM
- 256 GB Storage
- Snapdragon 700
- 5G Capable
- Display with 120Hz refresh rate
I’m sure the device will be great. It should be neat to see an affordable option with reliable specs and reliable quality. Let’s see how it reviews when it launches later this year.
Apple:
iPhone SE 2021/iPhone SE Plus: I was excited to see the 2020 version of the iPhone SE. The original iPhone SE was critically acclaimed, and the 2020 version of the SE was also critically acclaimed. So I can only continue to be excited to hear that 2021 will have a different iPhone SE version launch. You can check out the specific rumors surrounding iPhone SE from MacWorld UK.
This particular version could be in the body of the 5.5" iPhone Plus versions (think iPhone 6/6s/7/8 Plus) with 2021 updated internals. the iPhone SE 2020 launched with iPhone 11 internals and the 4.7" body known from the iPhone 6 to iPhone 8 versions from years past.
The rumored internals for iPhone SE 2021 is light, but we can expect to see the 12 internals including the A14 chip, 4–6GB RAM, etc.
I’ll keep looking around to see if there is anything else to find concerning iPhone SE as the days continue. The iPhone SE price range is expected to start around $400.
There are so many more phones launching throughout 2021. We’ll likely see more mid-range options from Samsung, the affordable Google Pixel 5a, options from Nokia, and the mythical BlackBerry phone that I am so excited about.
I’ll keep on wandering down the phone announcements journey as the months continue. Let’s see what else happens!
