Samsung’s innovative Galaxy Z Fold 3 may turn out to be better than anticipated in one important area.
Recent leaks suggested that Samsung’s soon-to-be-released Galaxy Z Fold 3 might deliver a somewhat disappointing rear camera. However, the latest information details a specification that’s a little better than we had once thought.
The leak comes from Twitter tipster @FrontTron, who earlier hinted at a rather disappointing Z Fold 3 rear camera offering virtually no upgrade over the existing Z Fold 2.
However, the same tipster has now provided a crucial update to this information with some important extra details. According to @FrontTron, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will indeed offer three 12-megapixel rear cameras, much like the Galaxy Z Fold 2, but all three of these will support phase-detect autofocus. This will bring autofocus capabilities to the ultra-wide camera for the first time.
The overall rear camera specifications look set to remain significantly below Galaxy S21 Ultra flagship level (details below), but the addition of an autofocus ultra-wide camera would boost the quality of ultra-wide shots while potentially enabling close-up macro photography too. It’s a feature Apple is hotly tipped to be adding to the iPhone 13 Pro range later this year.
Detailed Specs
The 12-megapixel wide, 2x telephoto and ultra-wide camera are expected to offer sensors with 1.8µm, 1.0µm and 1.12µm pixels respectively. These are considerably smaller than those on the Galaxy S21 Ultra (when its pixel-binning technology is taken into consideration) and, unfortunately, this would limit the overall quality of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 camera, especially in low-light situations.
It appears that, for the time being, Samsung fans will have a tough decision to make between the flagship with the best display or the one with the best camera.
