Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes Google’s Pixel Pass leaks, part two of Samsung Unpacked, first look at Galaxy S22 Ultra, Nokia G300 launch, Android 12 review, China’s OnePlus 9RT, and Twitter’s Android surprise.
Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).
Google’s Potential Pixel Subscription
As the geekerati wait for the full launch and availability of Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, news of a potential bundling of Google Services has come to light. Echoing the Apple One subscription offer, the Google Pixel Pass may act as an extended warranty when you buy a new Pixel, as well as subscriptions to key Google services.
"From the documents, it seems Pixel Pass will combine up to four subscriptions: YouTube Premium or YouTube Music, Google One, Play Pass, and Google Fi. These services cover video and music streaming, cloud storage, an app subscription bundle, and mobile network coverage. There’s no mention of Google Stadia, the search giant’s cloud game streaming service."

Samsung’s "To Be Continued…” Launch Event
Not to be left out, Samsung is also holding an event next week. It continues the tradition of using the “Unpacked” moniker, but labels this as “Part 2”, presumably building on August’s event that saw the folding Galaxy smartphones take pride of place. Whether that means the Galaxy S21 Fan Edition arrives remains to be seen:
"Our users are multifaceted and live life in so many colorful, interesting and unique ways. As such, the technology they use every day should reflect their individuality. Join Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 on October 20 to see how Samsung is opening up new experiences for self-expression through technology. The event will be streamed on Samsung’s YouTube channel beginning at 10 a.m. ET."
This Could Be The Galaxy S22 Ultra
No doubt “Unpacked” will return in 2022, and when it does, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to take pride of place. Gathering together the latest leaks and information, the team at Let’s Go Digital have worked with Concept Creator to showcase what the S22 Ultra could look like. :
"The Samsung S22 Ultra is equipped with a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with beautifully rounded screen edges. The phone will have narrow bezels and a punch-hole selfie camera will be integrated – similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra . Most likely the 40 megapixel resolution will also be maintained. The new top model within the S-series will be equipped with an S Pen compartment for the first time."
Nokia G300 Heading To America
Fresh from the reveal of the Nokia T20 Android tablet last week, HMD Global have released the Nokia G300, a very budget friendly smartphone. Offering 5G connectivity for $199 in the US market, it balances the specs well to reach an attractive price:
"The phone has a 6.5-inch HD Plus 20:9 ratio display, 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage (expandable up to 1TB of storage) – which is more than you’ll get from the 32GB that come standard on most budget phones. For rear cameras, it has a 16MP f/1.8 camera, 5MP ultrawide, and 2MP depth sensor, along with an 8MP front-facing shooter."

Reviewing Android 12
With Android 12 set to reach the public over the next few weeks (both in new handsets and updates to existing handsets), what can you expect in this update? From the new UI design in Material You, through the return of widgets, to improved security, and beyond, Cameron Faulkner reviews the new OS from Google:
"For the most part, it’s still Android. You can easily get by on the new update without using the smattering of new features that Google buried in the settings, though it’s worth seeking out a few of them… In some cases, though, the refreshed design comes at the cost of information density. Power users might feel like they’re using a Fisher Price phone, particularly when it comes to how the pull-down menu looks, but others may not mind as much."

Keeping It Cool With A New OnePlus
Following on from the recent announcement of a strategy with more focus on regional models, OnePlus has launched the OnePlus 9RT in China. Sporting a Snapdragon 888, similar to the OnePlus 9, it has added ‘Space Cooling’ with a larger heatsink offering 20 percent more heat dissipation. That should take care of the hot-running Snapdragon:
"The OnePlus 9RT is set to go on pre-order in China later today, sales and shipping will kick off on the 19th (Tuesday). The prices start at CNY 3,300 ($510/€445/₹38,500). For international readers, this is more than the launch price of the vanilla OnePlus 9 (CNY 3,800 for an 8/128 GB phone), though that has fallen since then. The vanilla model was €700 in Europe."
(GSM Arena).
And Finally...
It’s taken some time for what feels like a fundamental option, but Twitter’s Android app now supports automatic switching to dark mode as it follows the choice in the system settings:
"We’ve got something for our besties on Android: auto dark mode! When your device is set to dark mode, now you can have your Twitter app match automatically. Tap the [lightbulb] icon at the bottom of the sidebar menu and turn on “Use device settings”.
