Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes the latest Galaxy S23 FE details, Pixel Fold spare parts and first review, Nothing Tech’s financing round, Zenfone 10 launch, OnePlus V Fold leaks, and a capital letter for Android.

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

Samsung Galaxy S23 Fan Edition Details Leak

"Notably, the smartphone is likely to incorporate a telephoto camera sensor, a relatively uncommon sight in devices within this price range… Comparing the design of the Galaxy S23 FE with Samsung’s current portfolio, it bears a striking resemblance to the Galaxy A54 model. The upcoming smartphone is expected to sport a flat display with a size of approximately 6.4 inches.

Pixel Fold Review

The Pixel family has finally joined the foldables market, with Google’s Pixel Fold now available. It’s an expensive yet revolutionary device.

"The Pixel Fold answers questions such as "can we build this form factor”, “will our software run on it”, and “will popular Android apps be accessible.” It’s less clear if the “why” questions can be answered. “Why buy this?”, “why develop for this?”, and “why is it a better choice than a regular smartphone?” "

Pixel Fold Parts

Google has continued working with iFixit to provide parts and repair guides to the Pixel family. With the Pixel Fold released, parts for Google’s first foldable are now available.

"We offer mail-in and walk-in repair services for Pixel Fold outside warranty period (out of warranty repair). We are also planning parts, repair guides and tools available via iFixit. For Pixel Fold specifically, we are offering Extended Warranty (Preferred Care), which will give customer coverage against accidental damages and mechanical breakdowns after the warranty period ends. The customer can buy either a month plan or a one time payment. With this service, the customer can get their Fold repaired – or if needed, replaced – with a deductible."

Asus Zenfone 10 Review

The small flagship smartphone is not dead. Asus continues its Zenfone range with the launch of the Zenfone 10 this week, a 5.9-inch smartphone running the highest spec possible. I took time to review the new handset this week:

"Asus has some nice design touches that make the experience of the Znefone 10 a good ergonomic one. The handset is a complete box, there’s a slight chamfering on the top edges, the chassis corners curve smartly but not sharp, and the soft-feel back of the handset is slightly recessed to mask both the sharp edge, but to also create a small lip that lets you hold the handset firmly."

Nothing Tech’s Latest Financing

Nothing Tech has closed a round of investment, with a reported $96 million injection into the company. This happens ahead of the expected launch of the Phone (2) during July:

"Highland Europe is leading the round, with previous backers GV (Google Ventures), EQT Ventures and C Capital also participating. Swedish House Mafia is also getting a strategic stake, one that’s already being put to work… This investment brings the total raised by the company to $250 million — including two rounds of crowdfunding totaling some $11.5 million. Nothing is not disclosing its valuation. (We’re trying to find out and will update as we learn more.)"

OnePlus V Fold Display Details

More details on OnePlus’ first foldable phone have been leaked. As well as reinforcing the use of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset backed up by 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, details on the all-important internal and external screens are being discussed:

"While we wait for the launch date, our industry sources have revealed that the OnePlus foldable phone will sport a massive 7.8-inch foldable AMOLED display with a 2K resolution. As expected, the screen will refresh at 120Hz. There will be a 6.3-inch AMOLED display on the outside with a 120Hz refresh rate as well."

And Finally...

Google has quietly tried out its new Android branding in various locations over the last few months. You might have spotted a more 3D-esque droid head, but the most significant change is more noticeable…. the Android word mark will finally be capitalised!

"We’re showcasing some elements of our new brand identity on various surfaces, including our CES booth from earlier this year and other campaign materials like digital & banner ads. We’ll have more to share in the coming months."
