Nokia's Next Feature Phone May Run Android - PCMag.com

Two mobile operating systems dominate the smartphone market, but while iOS may be limited to Apple's own devices, it looks as though Android is about to branch out on to feature phones for the first time.

As XDA Developers reports, a new feature phone model has appeared on the Wi-Fi Alliance website from Nokia brand owner HMD Global. The phone is called the Nokia 400 4G (model TA-1208) and it's a feature phone, but the operating system is listed as GAFP, which is thought to be a touchless version of Android.

This isn't the first time we've heard rumors of Android being used on a feature phone. Back in July last year, 9To5Google posted an image of a feature phone running Google with the phone looking very much like a Nokia handset. A video of the phone being used surfaced in September, with only a six second teaser (included above) remaining of the footage.

HMD Global already offers some very cheap smartphones running Android, with the soon to be released $129 Nokia 2.3 being the perfect example. However, feature phones can be sold for half that price, so if it's possible to ship one with at least part of the Android feature set and services available (Google Assistant, Google Translate, for example), why not try?

For now, we don't know exactly what HMD Global has planned for the Nokia 400 4G, but the fact it's been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance certainly suggests this is a real device being prepared for launch. Perhaps we'll hear something official at Google I/O in May.
