Sales of smartphones in the China market remained lackluster in May, with related shipments declining 31% from a year earlier to 22.6 million units in the month, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Technology (CAICT).

The shortages of some critical IC parts, including driver ICs and power management (PMW) ICs, were the main culprits causing slow sales in the month, according to sources from Taiwan's handset supply chain.

Smartphone shipments in China may stage a rebound in June, as the 618 e-commerce promotional campaigns may result in strong sales, said the sources.

CAICT data also showed that shipments of 5G-enabled models in China reached 16.74 million units in May, representing a 7% increase from a year earlier and accounting for 73% of total handset shipments.

While local brands, including Xiaomi and Realme, saw their market shares improve in May thanks to the rollouts of new 5G models with higher price/performance ratios, Apple also managed to ramp up its share in China to 15% in May.

Overall, smartphone shipments in China totaled 146 million units in the first five months of 2021, increasing nearly 20% from a year earlier, according to CAICT.
