The two biggest market players over the last few years have tended to be Samsung and Apple. Both produce high quality and stable platforms that are highly sort-after by millions of people around the world.
But according to some sites, there was a clear winner as of the first quarter of 2019:
"In the first quarter of 2019, Samsung retained the top spot in worldwide smartphone sales achieving a 19.2% market share. Huawei achieved the highest year-over-year growth among the world's top five, growing 44.5% and smartphone sales totaling 58.4 million units." - India Times.

What are the best smartphones to buy in 2020?
So, without further ado, here are 7 of the best smartphones you might want to consider buying in 2020. There are many great phones out there, and this list is simply to highlight some of the better ones.
This list is also in no particular order.
1. The Google Pixel 3a is pretty good
The Google Pixel 3a is a very good smartphone that you might want to consider getting your hands on in 2020. It has a fantastic camera, gorgeous OLED display, great performance, and excellent battery life.
One downside is that the phone is not waterproof and also lacks a microSD slot. This is aimed at the mid-market and for your money, it is a very good phone indeed.
This is a very well-rounded smartphone and is widely considered the best Android phone on the market.
2. Google Pixel 4 is a very solid smartphone
Another offering from Google, Pixel 4 is also another amazing smartphone you might want to consider buying in 2020. It has a very attractive design, a 90Hz display, and a class-leading camera.
The phone can provide Live Caption and Recorder functions that are, frankly, amazing additions to the smartphone. However, it doesn't have the largest memory storage and its battery life can be a little lackluster.
"The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL offers powerful hardware, innovative software that actually makes your life easier, and the best cameras you'll find on a flagship phone line." - PC Magazine.
3. OnePlus 7 Pro is yet another great smartphone for 2020
The OnePlus 7 Pro is another fantastic smartphone for 2020. At just under $500 apiece (directly from OnePlus), this phone comes with a lot of "bang for your buck."
It is one of the fastest Android phones on the market and is widely considered a great value for money. The phone has a very smooth software, a notch-less screen and lots of camera options not available on other phones.
Photos can be a little undersaturated however and it does lack 802.11 ax Wi-Fi connectivity. It also lacks a headphone jack if that is a deal-breaker for you.
Given that it comes with some features you would only expect on higher-end market prices, this phone is one of the best value smartphones on the market for its class.
4. The Samsung Galaxy S10e is pretty tasty too
The Samsung Galaxy S10e is another great choice for a new smartphone in 2020. It comes with amazing screen color and clarity and has one of the best processors and modems on the market.
It also comes complete with a wide-angle camera, a headphone jack (Yippee!) and its size means it is pretty ergonomically pleasing.
The phone does suffer from low-light camera performance which is also not as good as the Pixel 3 detailed above. Its fingerprint sensor can also be a little buggy at times.
At the end of the day, the Samsung Galaxy S10e is one of the best on market for its overall price, performance, and size.
5. Let's all welcome back the Motorola Razr!
The Motorola Razr is scheduled for release at some point in early 2020 but it couldn't come sooner. For anyone who owned and used the older Razr, the return of this iconic phone is very much appreciated.
Advertised as having a 6.2-inch plastic OLED display and beautiful design, the Razr will not be the cheapest of phones on the market but is certainly one of the most unique.
"The Razr actually incorporates two displays: that humongous one on the inside, which folds in half, as well as a second exterior panel used for notifications, message previews, and quick selfies. There's a fingerprint sensor embedded in the chin at the bottom of the device, as well as two camera lenses — one 16-MP shooter on the outside, and another 5-MP shooter notched within the main screen." - Tom's Guide.
6. We have to mention the iPhone 12
Love Apple or hate them, no list of great smartphones would be complete without including their latest iteration of this highly successful smartphone series. The iPhone 12 is rumored for release later in 2020 and will likely be a huge success, as always.
There are very few details about the phone at this stage, but it is likely to be a significant improvement over its predecessors.
7. The Microsoft Surface Duo looks interesting
And finally, 2020 should see Microsoft's attempt to return to the mobile market with its Surface Duo. It will run on Android and its main selling point is its dual-screen setup.
The "phone" was revealed last year and has a tentative launch of summer 2020.
The phone comes complete with Gorilla Glass-covered 5.6-inch displays that are joined by a hinge in the middle. According to some, the phone will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 processor.
