If you want to capture what's on the screen on your Android smartphone as an image, you can take a screenshot. Google's operating system has a standardized way of capturing screenshots, but it can vary between Android versions and certain devices. It's also possible to record screen activity on Android, although, again, that can vary with operating system versions and devices. Once a screenshot or screen video has been captured, they can be editing and shared with just a few taps.
Google added screenshot functionality to Android with the 4th generation 'Ice Cream Sandwich' version of the operating system in 2011. It wasn't until almost ten years later, though, that native screen recording functionality was added. That came with Android 10 but, strangely, is accessed differently to the screen capture functionality.
When a user has identified a screen they want to capture, the standard Android method for doing so is to hold down the power and volume down buttons simultaneously. This may take a couple of moments, but should trigger a screenshot and then give users the option of editing or discarding what has been captured. The standard way to take a screenshot in Android was only changed to this relatively recently, with it previously having been done by holding down the power button and then tapping the 'screenshot' button. If the power and volume button combination doesn't work, users should try this second method as it may be that they are running an older version of Android. If neither method works, it may be that the device manufacturer has implemented its own method, which users can check at the relevant manufacturer support site.
Android Screen Recording & Capture Sharing
Recording screen activity on an Android device is less likely to have different methods due to the functionality having only been introduced relatively recently. Users need only swipe down twice from the top of their screen to pull down the quick settings menu, tap the screen record icon, select what they want to capture, and then capture the intended on-screen activity after a countdown. If the screen record icon is not visible in the menu, users can add it by tapping the edit menu pencil icon in the lower-left corner of the pull-down menu.
Once a user has captured an image or video from their device, they will be given the option to share it immediately. By tapping 'share,' they are given a selection of apps and services via which to do so. Alternatively, they can choose to edit it first. After capturing a screenshot, an 'edit' option is shown via which users can crop, draw on, or highlight areas of the image. For more advanced editing, the image can be opened in a separate editor like Google Photos. After capturing a video of screen activity, the only option offered other than sharing is to open the video in Google Photos by default. The video can be edited there or opened in another editing app for more advanced video editing.
