Do you wonder sometimes whether everyone is like you—thoroughly addicted to their smartphones? Chances are yes, if you go by the numbers in the new report from BuyShares. According to its charts, which are sourced from Ericsson, an (almost) consistent compound annual growth rate of 10.54% for the last five years has seen the market for smartphone subscriptions double from 3 billion in 2015 to 6.1 billion in 2021.

They go on to show listings for smartphones sold (hitting an estimated 1.5 billion units in 2021, which is actually a smidgen lower than in 2018 and 2019).

That’s an impressive increase from the 122 million units sold back in 2007, the year of the first iPhone.

Where are the users? Mostly in China, according to data from Newszoo. Of the 3.6 billion smartphone users as of 2020 (estimated to go to 4.3 billion by 2023), the majority are in the PRC—912 million people there use them. That's not surprising considering the population of the country, but China is only eight on the list for the penetration rate of smartphone users. In that case, the United States leads with 82% of people using smartphones. China's population only has 63% of people carrying their screens.  The global average, for 2020 at least, is 46.5%.
