Vivo has launched a new smartphone that features a color-changing back. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer is known for innovation and its 2018 Vivo X21 was the first smartphone to feature an in-display fingerprint scanner. Something that has since become a major smartphone trend. The Vivo Nex was another smartphone from the company, and the first to feature a pop-up selfie camera.

In another example of innovating within the smartphone space, Vivo launched the world's first smartphone to feature an auto-focus front camera in 2020 with its Vivo 20. The company even managed to replicate the stabilization effects of a gimbal with a movable lens module in the Vivo X50 Pro, a flagship smartphone which can still compete with newer devices like the OnePlus Nord 2 Pac-Man Edition.

Vivo has now announced its latest smartphone series, the Vivo V23. The lineup contains two models - the vanilla Vivo V23 and the Vivo V23 Pro with slightly better specifications.  The regular Vivo V23 features a 6.4-inch 90Hz AMOLED display and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset. It has three rear-facing cameras with a 64-megapixel primary lens and a dual front-facing camera with a 50-megapixel eye auto-focus lens. In contrast, the Vivo V23 Pro comes with a 6.56-inch 90Hz AMOLED panel and is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC.

Sunlight Activates Vivo V23's Color-Changing Back Panel

Vivo V23 color-changing back

The Vivo V23 (Sunshine Gold model) comes with a back panel that completely changes hue when in the sun. The smartphone's back panel is made up of Fluorite AG Glass which is responsible for the color-changing nature. When used indoors, the matte back of the device looks golden in color. However, once outdoors and exposed to the UV Rays, the back panel starts changing color and turns into a bright bluish-green shade. Although, the camera module on the Vivo smartphone retains its color. One can actually see the color of the smartphone slowly shifting from golden to light green to bright blue in a few minutes. For reference, the Vivo V23 also comes in another Stardust Black color, but this variant does not have a color-changing back.

Although color-changing tech was showcased before with the OnePlus 8T Concept smartphone, the overall form factor of the Vivo V23 along with its color-changing capability makes for an eye-catching phone. The smartphone was released in India on January 5th, 2021 and at a price of 29,990 INR, which roughly translates to around $402 USD, for the 8 RAM and 128GB of storage model. The Vivo V23 Pro smartphone ups the price to around $520 USD with the same RAM and storage configuration.
