Motorola Frontier might be the first smartphone to sport Samsung's much-talked-about 200-megapixel mobile camera. Samsung originally announced its 200-megapixel image sensor last September after weeks of rumors and speculations in the media. Named the ISOCELL HP1, it is the world's first 200-megapixel smartphone camera sensor that comes with a dynamic pixel binning technology to adjust the output resolution depending on the ambient light.

Interestingly, the first smartphone to use the new camera sensor won't be a Samsung device. Instead, it's expected to be the Motorola Frontier, also known as the Motorola Frontier 22. The device is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and feature a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED 144Hz display. It's also said to sport a 4,500mAh battery with support for 125W charging. It is also rumored to come with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

While earlier rumors suggested that a Motorola device would be the first to use Samsung's 200-megapixel sensor, there's been no leaked images that gave people a look at the camera on an actual smartphone. However, that changed on Monday when prolific tipster 'fenibook' posted what seemed to be a hands-on image of a smartphone on the Chinese social media site Weibo. Said to be the Motorola Frontier, the device appears to sport the new 200-megapixel sensor, two additional cameras and a flash as part of a triple-camera setup at the back. The '200MP HP1' branding is prominently visible, as are the 'OIS' and 'f/2.2' labels, suggesting that the primary camera will come with optical image stabilization and an f/2.2 aperture.

While there's no more news on either the phone or the sensor at this point, earlier rumors suggested that the Motorola Frontier (or Frontier 22) will be the company's next flagship smartphone. If the rumored hardware is anything to go by, it would certainly be a premium device. There's no word on when it will launch, but rumors claim it might happen in July 2022. In addition, the HP1 sensor is rumored to show up on a Xiaomi phone at some stage, although there's no information about when that might happen.

As for when the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP1 sensor will be used on a Samsung phone, there's no news on that either. Speculations from late last year suggested that the sensor might show up on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, although whether that will happen remains to be seen. Either way, there will likely be more leaks in the weeks and months ahead that will reveal additional information about both the Samsung HP1 sensor and the devices using it.
