Android 12L, an update to Android 12 that's focused on devices with large screens such as tablets and foldables, has officially been released. Google has been constantly criticized for the poor state of Android on tablets, as the user experience is not the best and doesn't make great use of the extra screen estate. The last time Google made a major attempt to tailor a unique experience for tablets was in 2011 when it announced Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
The biggest rival to Android tablets is the iPad, and while there are advantages that the former has over the latter, the user experience on Apple's tablet line gives it the upper hand. Ever since the first iPad was released in 2010, the software has been tailored to take full advantage of the larger screen even though it ran iOS like the iPhone. In 2019, Apple decided to rename iOS for iPad to iPadOS to emphasize the growing differentiation between the experience on its phones and tablets.
Android 12L brings a number of changes to large screen tablets, including a redesigned layout for the notification shade which puts Quick Settings tiles on the left and notifications on the right. Google also mentioned that there is a two-column design when setting up a new device and under the Settings app, eliminating the need to move in and out of each section. Another addition is a taskbar that allows for easy app-switching and better multitasking — simply dragging an app from the taskbar to an already open app will initiate split-screen mode.
Which Devices Will Get Android 12L?
Some of these new features should be familiar as they are available in one form or another on existing tablets particularly those from Samsung. However, the good thing is that they are now a part of Android which means tablets from other brands that run Android 12 or later should have these features by default. The Android 12L update will be arriving later in 2022 on tablets and foldables from Samsung, Lenovo, and Microsoft, according to Google. The exact time has not been revealed and the timeframe is likely to differ based on the manufacturer and the device.
There are still a number of ways that the Android experience can be improved on large-screen devices, especially with respect to apps, but Android 12L is a big step in the right direction. Google has said it will continue to build more features and functionalities for this category of devices in Android 13 and beyond, thus reinforcing it is now committed to improving the experience. That should not be surprising considering Google is planning to launch its first foldable smartphone in 2022. Knowing Google, it will likely also come with some exclusive Android features, some of which might later be made available to other devices.
