Oppo Find X7 Ultra

Smartphone maker Oppo has unveiled its newest flagship handheld, the Find X7 Ultra. Despite only being announced for release in China at the time of publication, the phone is still worth looking at because it features four 50-megapixel rear cameras and sports the biggest telephoto sensor in any phone, according to Oppo.

The X7 Ultra’s “HyperTone Camera System” features Hasselblad branding and engineering across all four cameras. The main camera features Sony’s second-generation LYT-900 Type 1.0 (colloquially known as 1-inch) image sensor and a 23mm f/1.8 equivalent lens. The ultra-wide camera has a Sony LYT-600 sensor and 14mm f/2 equivalent lens.

The remaining two rear cameras are both periscope telephoto imagers. The 3x optical zoom has a Type 1/1.56 Sony IMX980 image sensor, which Oppo says is about three times larger than the typical competing telephoto lens. The 65mm f/2.6 lens has optical image stabilization and the manufacturer says it is well suited to portraiture. The other periscope zoom is a 6x telephoto lens backed by the Sony IMX858, a Type 1/2.51 image sensor. The 135mm lens has a relatively slow f/4.3 aperture and works alongside AI-powered enlargement to offer 12x zoom capabilities.

It is worth taking a closer look at the “HyperTone” branding for the quartet of cameras. The HyperTone Image Engine, debuting in the Find X7 Ultra, promises to improve overall image quality with computational photography advancements, including improved HDR and more natural image sharpening. The engine has been in development for two years and has been built with input from professional photographers and color experts, per Engadget. The HyperTone Image Engine will find its way onto existing Oppo devices, too, which is nice.

Hasselblad’s fingerprints are all over the Find X7 Ultra. Beyond the Hasselblad Portrait Mode, which promises a more realistic, cinematic bokeh with significantly improved edge detection, the smartphone also has a Hasselblad Master Mode inspired by the Hasselblad X2D 100C medium format camera. This mode lets users tweak image quality parameters and assume manual control over vital settings like ISO, shutter speed, exposure compensation, focus, and white balance. Following an imminent update, users can also use a “Raw Max” capture mode that promises 16-bit color depth in BT.2020 color space and 13 stops of dynamic range.

The Oppo Find X7 Ultra will ship in three colors: Ocean Blue, Sepia Brown, and Tailored Black. The device supports wireless charging, features Oppo’s brightest QHD display et, and supports up to 4,500-nit brightness for HDR content. The 6.82-inch display has a 120Hz refresh rate and includes “rainwater touch,” which promises improved touch performance when the screen is wet.

Surprisingly, despite the super impressive feature set, Oppo seemingly doesn’t intend to launch the Find X7 Ultra outside of China. In that market, the device ranges from 5,999 yuan to 6,999 yuan, depending on storage and RAM configurations; that works out to about $850 to $1,000 at current exchange rates. The device will ship later this week.
