Another study found that employees typically spend 56 minutes each workday performing non-work-related activities on their cell phones. 

Smartphones also affect our mental health positively or negatively. For example, a study published in the National Library of Medicine suggests various mobile meditation apps like Calm play a major role in stress management. "Mindfulness meditation mobile apps may be a promising approach to reduce stress and address the barriers to stress management reported by college students," the researchers suggested. A study by MIT researchers corroborates these findings: "There are a lot of great ways to incorporate mindfulness training, but in general, it's more resource-intensive than having people download an app." 

On the flip side, some smartphone apps are bad for our mental health. Social media apps, for instance, present a double-edged sword. While they connect us with loved ones far away, they can also lead to feelings of loneliness or inadequacy, especially when bombarded with images of perfect holiday celebrations. This aspect is crucial in evaluating smartphones: how do their interfaces and algorithms influence our social media interaction? Are there features that help us manage our social media consumption, or do they encourage endless scrolling? 

Another factor to consider is the 'digital detox' trend, which gains traction during the holidays. Many seek to reduce their screen time to spend more quality time with family and friends. Luckily, most smartphones have built-in digital wellness tools, like screen time trackers and focus modes, which make them more appealing. These tools empower users to take control of their digital lives, making them ideal choices for those wishing to strike a healthier balance. 

Additionally, the role of parental controls in smartphones cannot be overlooked. With children on holiday break, parents are more conscious of screen time and online safety. Phones that offer robust and user-friendly parental controls thus stand out in phone comparisons, as they provide peace of mind to parents seeking to protect their children from digital harms while allowing them wholesome and educational screen time. 

Every smartphone has a unique selling point, but ultimately, the decision is up to the user. Are you going to use yours to create a richer, more connected holiday experience, or will you let it detract from the season's true essence?
