I do think current phones or least by 2017 can last much longer than ones released in 2011.
Back in 2011, we still had phones with less than 1 GB of RAM. Bought a BlackBerry Bold 9000 and Apple iPhone 4S earlier this year. The Bold can only be used as a media player for music and videos. The 4S which I sold for double for what I got for no longer has a functional YouTube app. Can only view it from Safari and browsing on Safari was awful by iOS6. Practically unusable. Couldn't make comments from Safari.
I bought a Nexus 5 as well earlier this year. That's serviceable for browsing and YouTube but it's still very laggy. I don't see animation stutter but it does stall quite a bit. I'm guessing because it's Marshmallow and only 2 GB RAM. Still had the slower eMMC back in 2013 which slows down over time with dying memory cells if you keep adding and deleting stuff.
My guess is phones from 2017 like my Essential Phone will be even more serviceable by 2027 than say a Nexus 5 by 2023 but the lack of RAM and inability to use current apps will hurt it. It's only the insufficient RAM, lack of updates, and a degraded sealed battery that forces us to upgrade to another phone. But many phones can be very usable for even a decade.

Thats the problem with year by year fast android version releases. 11 just arrived but 12 is here, and soon 13 is around the corner & so on & so forth.

Google should release an Android version update every two or three years instead of every year, and focus on getting security updates for everyone

That's exactly very Google-y thing that happens. Ugh. SMH

Anonymous, 8 hours agoNot having latest android changes nothing. Just geeks care about it. I wish I still coul... moreIt changes everything. People run their entire lives on smartphones yet run years old versions of operating systems. Thinking app and component updates can fix security issues when most companies skip even monthly security updates issued by Google while phones are allegedly still fully supported, you know there's a huge problem. And just because surveys say Android is safer OS choice, they are referring to a fully updated latest version, not Android 9 from almost 4 years ago... So, yeah, it changes A LOT actually, but people here keep perpetuating this backwards idea that it's all great if you run outdated OS. It works, but it's old and full of security holes. It's why I don't like it and until Google changes how components of system are updated on a much lower level without depending on lazy incompetent phone vendors.

This is a big reason why I'll probably only buy "Pixel a" phones from here on. Personally, I do care about getting the current versions of Android in a timely manner. Manufacturers don't prioritize updating because it doesn't make them any additional money.

I wish I still could use iOS12.
My device was bug free.
Only advantage of updating was to keep using all apps. Nothing more.

I actually hate updating my firmware. I get a worse experience from updates. Battery life gets worse. Memory leaks. Some older apps gets broken.
My iPhone SE1 got updated to iOS 15.1. Battery life is absolutely atrocious. Was already getting bad by 14. I hate how the url bar is on the bottom. Kept my Essential Phone and Pixel 3 on Pie with no plans ever updating them. Nova has this lag each time I go home by Android 10.
I hope certain Android versions can last as long as Windows XP. Can still be used 10+ years. But most OEMs use sealed batteries and software updates for planned obsolescence for us to keep buying new phones. In 5 years, we can no longer use our phones because apps needs a certain version requirement for it. My LG G5 is on Nougat and can no longer download from the Play Store.
Thank goodness Android is still more versatile than iOS. Older apks can still work on older firmware. Not all but some. Heck, my Nexus 4 on KitKat could still run Mario Kart: World Tour. While iOS would need firmware from only 2-3 years ago to run a game like that. This is why I can't stand iOS and all their updates. More updates means shorter lifespan using those apps.
