Welcome to the 447th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:
- Google may make pairing Wear OS watches with new phones less of a hassle. An APK teardown revealed a potential new feature where you can back up your watch before you pair it with a new phone. Wear OS watches need reset before they can be paired with a new phone, so this is pretty good news. Read the link to learn more.
- Valve released a new app beta this week. It completely revamps the Steam mobile app. The beta version overhauls the UI, and Valve says it overhauls the framework as well. There are smarter notifications, a new Steam authenticator, support for multiple accounts, improved views of various screens, and more. It’s about time since the Steam app was fairly mediocre for a very long time.
- Google Play Games is coming to Windows soon, and the beta is available in some places this week. Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Australia can get in on the action now. That’s good news because it means we’re getting closer to a full Android gaming experience on PC. Plus, Google lowered the minimum requirements for use on PC as well. Hit the link to learn more.
- Plex was one of two large names that had a data breach this week. Unfortunately, usernames, encrypted passwords, and emails were stolen. Plex is forcing everyone to change their passwords as part of the cleanup process to contain the breach. Additionally, Plex heavily recommends that you enable 2FA just in case something happens.
- Lastpass was the other big company with a data breach this week. Luckily, this one wasn’t so bad. The hackers stole source code and technical information but were unable to retrieve passwords or usernames. Lastpass acknowledged the data breach, and you can read about it at the link. Fortunately, this one wasn’t harmful to the end user at all.
Among Gods
Price: Free to play
Among Gods is a gacha RPG with psuedo-action RPG combat mechanics. You hack and slash your way to victory with your heroes as you level them up and make them stronger. It has the usual gacha mechanics like summoning heroes to use. However, it also has super long grinds along with an energy system to make it that much longer. There is a PvE mode with a campaign and some other modes to keep you busy. There is also a PvP mode where you can tangle it up with other players, although you probably need to spend money to do well there. It has some early issues, but it has some potential if the developers can back off the grind times a little bit.
DanceFitme
Price: Free / $7.99 per month / $59.99 per year
DanceFitme is a workout app that uses dance to shed pounds. It features a variety of dance routines, including Zumba, Hip-hop, Salsa, K-pop, and many others. It’s mostly useful for weight loss because dance is also excellent cardio. It has varying difficulty levels, professionally created classes, and more. It’s a subscription service like most fitness apps these days, but it’s not quite as expensive as some competitors. The UI works well, the classes are well laid out, and dancing is actually fun, so it’s not the worst app in the world for losing weight.
Build Master: Unknownland
Price: Free to play
Build Master: Unknownland is a building sim that takes place on an unknown planet. You land on the only island on the whole planet. As you build, you expand the island, grow new plants, find food, and gather resources to build more things. You’re also on a small quest to find your friends from the crash landing. The developers have been pretty active in changing game mechanics. Some of the changes are good, and others are not so good. For example, the developers added new resources but also didn’t change the warehouse size, so you have more resources to collect and less space to store it comparatively. It’s a fun premise, though, and could be good as it gets more changes.
Backdrop
Price: Free
Backdrop is an app for sharing locations with friends. As an example, if I go to a nearby coffee shop, I can use the app to share details about that coffee shop with my friends. It works best as a discovery app where you can find interesting places around your general location. Obviously, this app caters most to people who travel a lot and are often in cities where they don’t know their surroundings. After all, if you’ve lived in the same spot for 20 years, you already know the good spots. In any case, the app needs a bit of work but otherwise it seems to work pretty well.
Wolf Game: The Wild Kingdom
Price: Free to play
Wolf Game: The Wild Kingdom is a strategy, but not a typical one. You play with wolves, and your goal is to hunt down prey so that you can eat. It actually uses strategy mechanics. You make yourself a little wolf army and take on other animals as they attack back. There is a PvE mode where you take down various big animals. There are also alliances so you can play with friends, an exploration element, and even a kingdom builder mechanic. To be honest, most of the mechanics are stuff you find in other games. However, the execution makes it more entertaining than most of the usual stuff you’ll find in the genre.
