Google Pixel 6a review: The ultimate budget-friendly smartphone? - British GQ

How does it stack up to some of the other mid-range smartphones on the market? On paper, it’ll top most metrics against the iPhone SE and the Nothing Phone 1, and compares favourably against everything else for display quality, battery life, camera quality and processing power. It won’t surprise you to learn that the market is bulging with affordable handsets at this price point, but you can’t argue with the specs.

Google Pixel 6a

An unrivalled camera setup

If there’s one thing Google has mastered it’s a camera system that takes exceptionally good pictures. The 6a, being budget-friendly, doesn’t have the same sensor or processing power you’ll find on the Pixel 6 or even the upcoming Pixel 7. Instead, you get a 12-megapixel (MP) sensor and a 12MP ultrawide with image stabilisation and raw processing power inside the camera bar (which is the same as the rear camera for the Pixel 5 series). It'll still hold up as a solid camera for BBQ Gram shoots and night-time photography, you just might not get the same sharpness from the pricier models.

A highlight for us is the portrait mode that softly blurs the background for stand-out selfies and a better focus on your subject, be that an aesthetically pleasing bowl of ramen or your significant other on the beach. The Google Pixel 6a’s night photography mode is also decent, though perhaps has lost its touch a bit compared to its more expensive brothers, with a fair amount of noise slipping through when trying to take low-light snaps.

However, the truly fun bit of the camera set on the Google Pixel 6a is the magic eraser feature, which lets you eradicate those pesky photobombers or unsightly blemishes on your snaps. Simply take your pic, hit the edit button and circle anything in the photo you don’t want to include and the internal smarts will wipe out the distractions for the perfect photo every time. It’s a tonne of fun to play around with and a great partner to the face de-blur and camouflage feature which sharpens your subject (even if you catch them in motion) and draws colour into the important sections of your photo for truly eye-catching snaps. Mix in the 4K video recording in HDR 60fps and you’ve got an excellent camera that rivals the Google Pixel 6 for photographic prowess.

Dynamic display is a beast for gaming

The Pixel 6a arrives with a 6.1-inch dynamic AMOLED display found on many other Android phones, placing it firmly in the category of “small smartphone”. It’s a great-looking screen, with games and movies suitably crisp and colourful on the go. It might just be our eyes, but it also feels a little brighter than other handsets we’ve used, which has been a godsend for trying to see what our sun-drenched photos look like through the heatwave. Although the OLED display's 60Hz refresh rate is something of a downer, its HD nature is still a step up from Apple’s iPhone SE.
