If you need to back up the data on your mobile phone, you can use Google Drive for Android devices, Samsung Cloud for Samsung phones, and iCloud for iPhones. But if you need lots of storage space, another option is Google One.
Available for free with 15GB of space or as a paid subscription with 100GB to 30TB of storage, the Google One app will back up your photos, videos, contacts, and calendar. You can back up data from a phone or tablet, so Google One works across all your mobile devices.
Why Google One?
You can already back up certain data separately across Google Drive, Google Photos, and other Google services, so you might be wondering why Google One is any better. This cloud storage service works across all Google services to give you more expansive storage. Your 15GB of free space also counts toward storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos.
If you use the Google One free option, you can back up data from your Android device or iPhone and iPad and free up space on your Google Account using a built-in storage manager. Upgrade to a Google One paid option, and your storage capacity is added to that initial 15GB. You also get dedicated customer support from Google experts, exclusive discounts, and advanced features for certain services.
As a few examples of the paid plans, a 100GB Google One plan costs $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year, while a 200GB plan will run you $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year. A 2TB plan is priced at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and includes a VPN for Android to encrypt your backups and other online activities. Splurge for a 30TB plan and you’ll pay $150 a month.
You can share a Google One plan with up to five other family members for free. If you’re already part of a family group on Google, you can easily share a Google One plan with other members.
Set Up Backup
First, download and install the Google One app for iOS or iPadOS from Apple’s App Store and for Android from Google Play. The app looks virtually the same across the three platforms with only minor differences such as the location of the toolbar icons and the settings screen. However, there is one key feature only available on Android, which is the ability to restore your backed up files.
Your first step should be to set up your backup. At the Home screen, tap Set up data backup. At the next screen, select the content you wish to back up—Contacts, Calendar, and/or Photos & Videos. Decide if you want to back up data over a cellular connection. Then tap Back up now, and your data will be preserved on Google’s servers. You must keep the app open on iPhone and iPad during this time, otherwise the backup will pause.
Manage Storage Space
Return to the home screen and swipe down to the Storage section or tap the Storage link at the top to see how much space has been used for the backups and other content. Tap the graph in the Storage section to see how the backups were allocated among Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Swipe down to confirm what data was backed up from your current device. Tap the option for Backup settings if you wish to change which data gets backed up.
From the Home screen or Storage screen, you can review and free up space if you’re running low. Tap Free up account storage. At the Storage Manager screen, the app reveals which types of content you can remove, such as emails and files moved to the trash but not permanently deleted, large email file attachments, and large videos. Review each suggested action and select any you wish to run.
Restore Backup (Android Only)
Now, let’s say you’ve lost files on your phone or you’re resetting it and want to restore specific data. On an Android device, you can recover the data you’ve backed up online. Swipe to the bottom of the Storage screen and tap Get backup. Tap the Restore link next to the type of data you want to recover. The app confirms your account and restores the files.
Upgrade Your Plan
If you want the 15GB of free storage to cover multiple devices and your family members, it might not be enough. You can spring for a paid subscription by tapping that ever-present Upgrade button floating in the app. Choose the plan you wish to purchase and select the monthly or annual subscription. Pay for the plan using your phone’s payment system and the app confirms your subscription. Tap the Get started button to dive in.
With a paid Google One membership, you can take advantage of certain benefits, such as hotel room discounts. Tap the icon for Benefits to review any available offers and follow the steps if you wish to redeem one.
A paid subscription also grants you access to Google’s customer support under the Support icon. You can chat with or email a Google support rep with a question or problem. You can also read popular articles about different Google One features and other topics.
Finally, return to the Settings screen to check out other options. Here, you can control the emails that Google sends you, manage your backup settings, change your membership plan, and review your family settings.
Invite Family Members
To share your Google One storage space with other family members, go to Settings in the app. On Android, tap the Settings link at the top and select the Manage family settings option. On iOS/iPadOS, tap the hamburger menu, select Settings, tap the option for Family settings, and then tap Manage Google family members. Follow the steps to create a family group, then invite people to it. Back at the Google One app, turn on the switch next to Share Google One with your family.
