NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -A few years ago, the North Platte Public School district (NPSSD) used a reporting system for students called “Crime Stoppers.” Unfortunately, the Crime Stoppers application did not meet the needs of the North Platte Police Department. By bringing the “See Something, Say Something,” application to the area, people are able to submit safety concerns. Through the application, the department has received information about students thinking about engaging in self-harm.
“Students know they need to do something as a friend, and this is an easy way for them to report that anonymously, that way they don’t make their friend upset and they can still care for their friend and get the services needed for their friend,” said NPPSD Resource Officer Jeremiah Johnson.
The “See Something, Say Something” app can be used for anything. People can anonymously send videos, photographs, audio recordings, and links. The police department has received information about drugs, domestic situations in homes, and child abuse.
“Particularly those people who might have some mental health issues or they don’t know where to cry for some of those services,” said Officer Johnson. “We follow through with those services and the school also assists us with those especially when it comes to the mental health to ensure we are supporting that student inside and outside.”
If external forces are interfering with a student’s ability to learn, the district works to identify the root of the problem.
“They focus on the whole student not just the academics part of the student,” said Officer Johnson. “Because we know, that with the academics there are so many variables around that kid that might prevent them from achieving. We know that if we support the student they are going to come out ahead.”
Many times, students this age feel like they are telling on their friend. School safety is their individual safety.
“We need students’ help,” said Officer Johnson. “If they see something that is either violent or hears something like a student harming themselves or planning to harm others, we want those reports. They are 100 percent anonymous, and we will follow through with every one of those reports to make sure we have safe schools in North Platte Public School district.”
This app is for the safety of everyone in this community.
“It is not just for students. It is for anyone in this community,” said Officer Johnson. “We are all stakeholders in all of our schools in the community. It is all of our responsibility to ensure the schools are safe. Any community member can use this app, it is directed towards the schools and school safety, and we will follow through will all those investigations.”
The App can be found at www.seeandsend.info. Parents and students are encouraged to download the app.
