Google Assistant is an incredibly powerful virtual assistant, and by changing its voice, users can add a personal touch to make using it even more fun. The Google Assistant was first introduced back in May 2016 as a component of the now-defunct Allo messaging app. Since then, it's expanded to smart speakers, smart displays, Android phones, and more as one of Google's most impressive software features. It can be used to answer random questions, control smart devices, and just about anything else.
Compared to something like Amazon Alexa, however, one area in which Google Assistant trails behind is how personal it is. While there's no denying the power and functionality of the Assistant, it's not quite as whimsical or personable the way Alexa and Siri can be (the standard 'Google Assistant' name doesn't really help in this regard). Thankfully, for users that are looking to customize the Assistant and give it some extra flair, Google has a few different voices that users can change it to. Ready to learn how to do it? Let's dive in!
To get started, grab an Android phone and open the Google app. Tap 'Snapshot' on the bottom navigation bar and then tap the profile icon in the upper-right corner — this opens up the Google Assistant settings. Scroll down the page a bit and then tap 'Assistant voice' under the 'All Settings' section.
How Many Google Assistant Voices Are There?
There are 10 main Google Assistant voices that users can choose at any time, including Red, Orange, Amber, Green, Cyan, Blue, Purple, Pink, British Racing Green, and Sydney Harbor Blue. The voices aren't explicitly listed as being men or women, but each one has a distinctly masculine or feminine sound to it. Certain voices also have different accents to them, as expected with names like British Racing Green and Sydney Harbor Blue.
Google Assistant also experiments with adding celebrity voices from time to time. John Legend was previously available as the first celebrity voice for the Google Assistant, but his voice was removed in March 2020. As of March 2021, users can select Issa Rae to be their Assistant voice. Regardless if someone is choosing a default voice or a celebrity one, just tap the desired voice to make the change (it'll show a checkmark to indicate it's been selected as the new voice).
While this guide is for changing the Google Assistant voice through the Android app, the new voice should apply to any Assistant devices that are associated with that same Google account — including smart speakers and displays. Voices can be changed at any time, too, so users can play around with the different options and find the perfect one.
