Android device users may have encountered many of their popular apps crashing over the last twenty-four hours, including Gmail. The issue appears to have been widespread enough to affect a significant number of users and a variety of apps. However, Google has been aware of the problem and has since released a fix. Here's what you need to know to get your Android apps back to normal again.

Android is a hugely popular mobile operating system. By 2019 the platform had already accumulated more than 2.5 billion active devices. In contrast, Apple only confirmed in 2021 that it has reached 1.5 billion active devices, of which only one billion were active iPhone devices. With the ability to reach so many users, issues like apps crashing have the potential to affect a lot of people and at the same time.

It is unclear when the issue first started, but over the course of the last day many users had noticed their apps were suddenly crashing. Typically the crash took place immediately after opening an app, but in some cases, users may have been able to navigate the app to some degree before the crash. Regardless of when the crash happens, the issue is understood to have affected a wide number of popular apps, including Google’s own Gmail and the Amazon app. Google’s Workspace Service Dashboard explained the issue while providing updates on what's being done to address the situation. The most recent Dashboard update confirms the problem has now been resolved.

The app crashing issue is directly related to Android System WebView. This is a feature on Android devices that allows applications to display web-based content. As it is a fairly core feature of the Android experience, and one that comes pre-installed on Android devices, it does link with many other apps which is why so many were affected. However, fixing the issue is fairly simply, as Google has now rolled out an update to Android System WebView. While the update will eventually make its way out to all devices in due course, users can speed up the process and get their apps working again by opening the Google Play Store app, tapping on the menu icon, then on My apps & games and then on the Update button next to Android System WebView.

Once the update has been applied, the issue should be fixed and apps that were previously crashing will be able to stay open once launched. While it is inconvenient for an issue like this to arise, and especially when it affects common communication apps like Gmail, problems like this are not uncommon. Therefore, what is more important in these situations is how quickly they are resolved. In this case, Google may have taken longer than many would have liked, but it has now fixed the Android app crashing issue.
