Android Circuit: OnePlus 9 Pro Review, Realme 8 Pro Launch, The Billion Dollar App - Forbes

https://ift.tt/2KSW0PQ

Taking a look back at seven days of news and headlines across the world of Android, this week’s Android Circuit includes serious problems with WebView, two new OnePlus smartphones, the RealMe 8 Pro’s massive camera, Moto’s new 5G phone, Google’s Android Ready SE program, Galaxy A52 reviewed, Samsung’s new podcast app, Qualcomm’s 780G, Honor’s Band 6 wearable, and Geshin Impact’s billion dollar success.

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many things that have happened around Android in the last week (and you can find the weekly Apple news digest here).

Did Your Android Phone Stop Working?

Countless Android users saw their smartphones ’throw a wobbly’ at the start of this week as key Google apps started to fail. Google confirmed the issue lay with its WebView app and after a few hours an updated version was available in the Play Store. A quick update on the app solved the issue, but it’s a timely issue on how the smartphone ecosystem is built on some narrow foundations:

"Google's status page now gives the all clear, and instructs affected users to open the Play Store and download the latest update for WebView as well as Google Chrome to avoid errors. I tried this on my phone and initially downloaded the previous update that was causing problems, but after I checked again and downloaded the new update everything is working smoothly once again."

OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro Launched

This week saw OnePlus, after a solid week of teasing the new features one at a time, launch the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 handsets. The former is very much aimed at taking on the iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, while the OnePlus 9 feels more like the original mission of providing a flagship experience at an affordable price. I’ve went into more detail in my launch review:

"With the first 2021 handsets - the 9 and the 9 Pro - OnePlus is not quite having a ‘do-over' of 2020 (now that would be a popular product), but it can take this launch to give a clear answer to those outside for he community, who and what a OnePlus smartphone is for?"

Realme 8 Pro’s Stunning Camera

What happens when you build a mid-range smartphone around a monster camera? You get the RealMe 8 Pro and its 108 megapixel camera. Yasmine Crossland reviews the new handset launched this week in the UK:

"With a strong focus on photography, the Realme 8 Pro is their first smartphone with a 108MP camera, and at the time of writing is the highest megapixel camera available on a phone. Up from the 64MP on the Realme 7 Pro, it should be able to produce much finer detail. "

Moto’s Budget 5G upgrade

Following the release of the G10 earlier this month, Motorola has bumped up the internal specs to add 5G:

"When you looked at the Moto G10 did you think “this would be awesome if it had 5G and cost €250 instead of €150”? Well, maybe you didn’t, but someone at Motorola HQ clearly did. This may not the introduction the Moto G50 would have wanted, but it is the one it deserves."

Keeping Your Enclave Secure

Google has launched the ‘Android Ready SE Alliance’. SE stands for Secure Element, a temper-resistant enclave in hardware that will allow for various user features such as digital keys for physical locks, personal identity documents, and digital money artefacts. A number of OEM partners have signed up to the alliance, and Google will be hoping others will join:

"In order to accelerate adoption of these new Android use cases, we are announcing the formation of the Android Ready SE Alliance. SE vendors are joining hands with Google to create a set of open-source, validated, and ready-to-use SE Applets. Today, we are launching the General Availability (GA) version of StrongBox for SE. This applet is qualified and ready for use by our OEM partners."

Samsung Galaxy A52 Review

Following last week’s Unpacked event, Abhijeet Mishra has reviewed the Galaxy A52, Samsungs mid-range handset that looks to deliver a premium experience:

" The fact that the Galaxy A52 comes with a Snapdragon processor for every market is going to make more than a few people happy. Throw in stuff like a big battery, 25W super fast charging, and three years of guaranteed OS updates along with the latest software out of the box, and the Galaxy A52 becomes a huge year-on-year upgrade and an even huger (is that a word?) upgrade for those using a two-year old phone, such as the Galaxy A50."

More Podcasts In The Galaxy

Samsung has added a podcast feature to its Samsung Free app, presumably to keep more users inside Samsung’s own ecosystem thanks to the service being pre-loaded on its handsets:

"Given how many apps Samsung includes pre-installed on its phones, it's always been surprising that a podcast app wasn't among them. With a new update to its entertainment-focused Free app (previously Samsung Daily), the company's flagship devices will now natively support podcasts out of the box."

A New Mid-Range SoC

Qualcomm has announced the SnapDragon 765G, the SnapDragon 780G. It offers three imaging signal processors, Qualcomm’s sixth-get AI engine, and Wi-Fi 6. Expect competitive mid-range handsets to show up with this SoC by the end of the year:

"As the first 7-series platform with a triple Image Signal Processor (ISP), the 780G is capable of shooting three 25-megapixel photos captured by zoom, wide and ultra-wide lenses at once. The ISP also enables smooth zooming and over a billion shades of colour with HDR10+ video capture, as well as improved low-light shooting capabilities."

Honor Turns The Corner To The Gym

Honor continues to build up its portfolio as a standalone company following its time as a Huawei subsidiary. This week it launched the Honor Band 6 globally, a health and fitness focused smartband with multiple workout modes and and up to fourteen days of use:

"The Honor Band 6 comes with a large 1.47-inch AMOLED screen with up to 64% screen-to-body ratio. This display uses a 2.5D curved glass as well as a side button design. This band also comes with the fourth-generation HUAWEI TreSeen 4.0 heart rate monitoring technology. It supports blood oxygen saturation monitoring, heart health monitoring, HUAWEI TruSleep 2.0 sleep monitoring technology, HUAWEI Trurelax stress butler, and women’s health management."

And Finally...

Geshin Impact has passed the $1 billion gross earnings in record time. The RPG passed the milestone in just under six months, which makes it the fastest to the billion, surpassing previous holder Pokemon Go:

"During the last 30 days, Genshin Impact ranked as the No. 3 revenue generating title on the App Store and Google Play combined, behind PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings from Tencent. Outside of China, however, miHoYo’s smash hit has been the No. 1 top grossing mobile game, racking up more than $129 million internationally over the past 30 days. That also makes it the No. 1 RPG both in, and outside, of China."
