Why upgrading this smartphone was not the smartest decision - The Daily Breeze

There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who are smart about using a smartphone and those who should not be allowed to have one.

I fall into a subcategory. I should not be allowed to have one, but I do. Whatever possessed me to upgrade my phone after five years of figuring out how to use the old one? I thought it would be good for me to learn the newer technology.

Right.

Recently, I found a phone message from one of my favorite cousins. Enthusiastically, I pushed the button to listen to her message. There is one more thing you need to know. It was about 1 a.m. my time. Sheila lives on the other side of the country.

Back to the button. When I pushed it, her phone started ringing. Horrified, because it was 4 a.m. her time, I tried to stop the call. Every button I pushed did some strange thing but none of them interrupted the call.

Being the lovely woman that she is, Sheila started laughing in response to my garbled apologies thereby laughing me off the edge of my humiliation. I still don’t listen to my messages after 8 p.m. California time.

Being able to place orders on my phone is a great thing. Except when it’s not.

For example, how did I wind up submitting an application to be a shopper at Instacart, when all I was trying to do was order groceries? Believe me, if I knew, I would tell you. Ditto for the Postmates app that now has me on their list as a backup driver. Really? I was just trying to order dinner.

In case you are wondering, I did not sign up online to get my COVID-19 vaccine shot. No way I was going to chance winding up as a vaccinator.

At least Amazon has not yet asked me to work for them and they did send me my last order of cat food. It says a lot about my life that I’m so excited about this.

I was getting a little discouraged about my learning curve until Maggie, my old faithful manual typewriter, sent me a note.

“Remember when you thought you’d never learn how to change my ribbon?”

Thanks, Mag. I needed that.
