Huawei's Next Foldable Smartphone Will Have An Outward-Folding Display - Screen Rant

Huawei has a new foldable smartphone coming and it will have a design that only a few manufacturers, including Huawei, have managed to pull off. The Mate X2 was one of the few foldables Huawei announced in 2021. The phone launched as Huawei's third foldable smartphone but its first with an inward folding design, similar to the Galaxy Z fold 3.

Huawei was one of the early pioneers in the foldable smartphone industry. However, its growth has been slowed by a U.S. ban which dealt a devastating blow to its business by cutting access to components. Last year, Huawei launched its first clamshell foldable smartphone, the P50 Pocket, the company's true rival to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip series. The phone is only sold in a few markets and the U.S. is not one of them.

Huawei's first foldable smartphone of 2022 uses a design that's not new but also not popular among phone manufacturers. Confirmed to launch as the Mate Xs 2, according to an official post on Weibo, the device is scheduled for an April 28 launch. What is special about the foldable is that it won't have an inward-folding design similar to the OPPO Find N or the Honor Magic V. Instead, it will have a screen that folds outward.

Back To Its Foldable Root

Huawei Mate Xs 2 has an outward folding screen

Following the 2019 Mate X and the 2020 Mate Xs, Huawei will launch the Mate Xs 2 as its third foldable smartphone with an outward-folding display. In this sense, the new foldable is not a real successor to the Mate X2 from 2021, but rather the follow-up to the foldable released in 2020. For those who are closely following Huawei's foldable devices, this shouldn't come as a surprise, since Huawei has always favored this design over the inward-folding design popularized by the Galaxy Z Fold line.

As for the specifications, the teaser image doesn't reveal much, although there are a few inferences that can be made based on past Huawei models and the company's current position. Like previous outward-folding devices, this phone should have only one screen, which doubles as both the cover screen and the main screen. Furthermore, it is expected to have a single set of cameras that serve as both front and rear cameras. It is also likely that the Mate Xs 2 will offer an improved hinge, possibly with a new Falcon Wing Design, as well as a high refresh rate display.

The foldable smartphone may come powered by Huawei's own Kirin 9000, although it could also come equipped with a 4G version of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888/888+ or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Unsurprisingly, considering the current situation, the Huawei Mate Xs 2 will launch first in China and may end up being exclusive to the region. If Huawei does decide to announce availability in other regions, including Europe, it will likely be in limited quantities.
